I came across a book in my general search of old text books. Mantra Mahodadhi. In the beginning of the book I found a glossary of the alphabets written in shloks (poems). The above pictures are two snapshot of few Shloks. Each two liner explains the meaning of each letter. I am yet to get to the meaning of each shlok. Looking at the wordings it seems it is narrating the energetic forms of the letters. From face it looks like a prayer with some macro cosmic projections. Apart from meaning and all what astonish me is the extent of exploration of power and properties of sound energy. I could not find any linguistic books on Indian letters available these days in general to any depth. Mere ignorance will ruin the treasure in coming days. On other hand borrowed ideas and concepts will make us dependent. Where shall we direct the generation to come? And I found just making the kids enable to read and write these letters may help them to explore it independently.
I would have never read Purans if I was not looking for any text on the Indian grammar. I mentioned Narad Puran in my opening blog. Agni Puran also explains the meaning of letters in its own terminology.
We have been taught letters (Matruka) in general and we feel no difference with other scripts and keep all letters in the world on same datum. Whereas we got some more in depth study of these letters.
Who will believe if one says that Narad Puran contains a considerable details on Geometry, Grammar, astronomy, music etc. These are the side effects of the study around linguistics of India.
To decode the meaning of these letters one need to have a command on all six darshans, four Veds and eight limbs of Ved. Mere proud won’t work till we understand the applied philosophy of the Indian letters.
The book is named appropriately to its contents – Mantra Mahodadhi – A sea of Formulas!
