Consonants got very less shelf life. They can not stand their own without a help from vowels even for a second. Try any consonants yourselves. Hence to present that, their legs are shown broken. Broken leg consonants are like a colour without having any shade of white into it. One has to bring any consonant to a minimum unit of understanding level of mind with a vowel. The unit is matra. That may be the reason that Latin alphabets are called like A, BE, CE, DE, …..AFE, AME.
